When you click on the gear, before you choose change data view, check Properties>Settings, then uncheck the bottom two boxes. Now when you change the data view (maintaining the same number of columns and rows) the formatting will stick!
Super useful when you have multiple data views in a report and only need to change couple things from one data view to the next. huge time saver!
