Another alternative is to set up a new time perspective:

([Time Perspective].[Default].&[YTD],ParallelPeriod([Time].[Default].[Year],1,[Time].[Default].CurrentMember))

Lots of interesting discussion here about MDX formulas.

When we talk to our Prophix support contacts, they caution us against doing things in MDX since it can slow down system performance. Especially for something simple like current month named set. Does anyone see those performance impacts?
